E-prescribing: How to Leverage the Tools in NextGen Office to Increase Efficiency

Prescribing medications is a major and central part of any provider’s daily tasks. Delays in the prescription process caused by inefficiency or broken processes can impact a patient’s ability to comply to the prescription and can ultimately impact the patient’s health.

NextGen® Office offers several integrated workflow solutions that improve the electronic prescription process:

Electronic pharmacy communication

  • Electronic pharmacy requests allow the management of approval requests for changes and refills directly in the EHR
  • Electronic prescription cancelation enables the provider to cancel the electronic order in cases where the prescription was created in error

These electronic tools reduce the burden on providers and staff to answer calls or respond to faxes from pharmacies while allowing more time to process clinical workflows and provide patient care.

Electronic prior authorization (EPA)

  • ePA simplifies the process of creating a prior authorization and alerts prescribers when such an authorization might be necessary

NextGen Healthcare partner, CoverMyMeds®, is part of the integrated solution which reduces back-and-forth with Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) and limits double-entry of clinical and demographic information. This solution reduces the average time to complete a prior authorization from 15–20 minutes to approximately 5 minutes. As one in 20 medications require prior authorization, utilizing CoverMyMeds’ built-in intelligence allows prospective prior authorization, reducing the potential for missing a prior authorization, and ensuring patients receive their medication in a timely fashion.

Electronic prescription of controlled substances (EPCS), including Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP)

  • EPCS in conjunction with PDMP
  • Required in many states

NextGen Office offers integrated access to approximately 40 state and local Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) data bases. NextGen Healthcare partner Appriss Health provides the PDMP access, allowing providers to review if a patient has previously received a prescription for a controlled substance from another provider. This single-click access increases efficiency and patient safety while limiting provider liability. The capability also qualifies providers for 5 Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) bonus points for 2019 and 2020.

By seamlessly connecting providers, health plans, and pharmacists, practices can see significant improvements in time-to-therapy and prescription-abandonment rates.
